Waking Gently

“A sense of separation from God is the only lack he really needs to correct.”   –ACIM

In the above quote Jesus is referring to mankind in general. He’s talking about the way things were before the event known by traditional Christians as, “the fall,” or as the same event is referred to in The Course, “the separation.” He states that, “until the ‘separation,’ which is a better term than the ‘fall,’ nothing was lacking.” Which means that we had no needs. We had no needs because we knew who we are, that we are part of God. Who could know for certain that he, or she, is part of God and still feel in need of anything?

I would venture a guess that, at least, ninety-eight percent of humans who inhabit this world see themselves as separate from God. That’s why this is a world filled nearly to capacity with fear. Even the emotion we refer to, and believe to be, “love” is filled with fear. The fear may slip from immediate awareness when two people are together and enjoying themselves. But as soon as they part and are out of physical togetherness fear begins to raise its ugly head deep within their emotions. The fear of an accident, sickness or even another person being more attractive raises the ugliness of loss to their perception.

“There is one Life. That Life you share with Him. Nothing can be apart from Him and live.”   –ACIM

The “Him” mentioned in the above quote is referring to God. It states plainly that no one could possibly be separate from Him because His is the only Life and each and every one of us shares that Life with Him. If we were, as most of us believe ourselves to be, separated from Him we would not be alive even to think we were. If you can think then you are not separate from God! To think you are separate from Him is an illusion.

“I Think Therefore I Am.”   –Rene Descartes

The French philosopher Rene Descartes had meditated himself into a serious conundrum. He had reached a conclusion that if anything, anything at all, could be doubted in any way then it was not to be relied upon and should be discarded as false. He even began to doubt his own existence. But to his relief, and maybe ours, he realized and became aware that he could think, and on top of that he realized that even to doubt something requires thinking. Therefore he concluded, and if I may say so, in my opinion, correctly, that a thinking mind must exist. And so his famous thought, I think therefore I am, was born.

I mention this here because of the importance The Course places upon the activity of thinking. For example it says: without you there would be an empty place in God’s Mind. And if you’re in God’s Mind then the Power of Reason must tell you that you’re a Thought of God. For what else could be in a Mind except Thoughts. In plain words, you were created as a Thought God thought of you, and that’s what you are and that’s what you’ll always be; a Thought held in God’s Mind.

“He gave you the power to create for your self so you could be like Him.”  –ACIM

Is it even possible, if you opened up all avenues of discernment, reasoning, clarification and understanding, to perceive the possibility of realizing the profoundness of the information contained in the above quote? Everyone should take a moment, or two, and let the profoundness of the idea that God created you to be like Him sink in!

If you can accept the truth of this idea and allow it to sink in deep enough to go beyond your intellect and settle into the center of your heart, eventually you’ll come to believe it beyond doubt. When you do you’ll never again, throughout all eternity, experience anything but perfect joy and happiness, which is God’s Will for you. How could you experience anything else if you know and believe you’re part of God and therefore, like Him; and how could you not be like Him if you’re part of Him?

And now, because of these profound, and hard to accept, ideas, such as, when God created you, He made you part of Him. I believe it’s time for some reassurance. To this end The Course plainly tells us: “This course will be believed entirely or not at all. For it is wholly true or wholly false and cannot be but partially believed.”

So it’s one or the other. Either you’re part of God. or you’re not. If you’re not then the information The Course provides to the contrary is false and that puts the whole Course in the same category as the contents of your garbage bin. As for me, I accepted the authenticity of The Course years ago and believe it to be one of the greatest Spiritual works ever produced. During my years as one of its students I have never found any reason whatsoever to cast the least doubt upon its message, which, in my perception, is completely immersed in Truth.

“Very simply the Holy Spirit teaches you to awaken others.”  –ACIM

Usually it’s impossible to give what you don’t have, but right here we find an exception, of sorts, to that fact. For as The Course informs us, you are not yet awake, but you can learn how to awaken. Then it continues with the line quoted above: Very simply the Holy Spirit teaches you to awaken others. It all boils down to the simple truth as The Course reveals it: “Of yourselves you can do nothing, because of yourselves you are nothing.”

When Jesus said, Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep and dreamed a dream… He was referring to the event I mentioned in my opening paragraph, which is the “separation.” Or as it’s referred to in traditional Christianity, the ‘Fall.’ And this so-called separation was the beginning of time. For it was, as The Course says, the tiny mad idea that time could intrude upon eternity.

Which means that ever since the beginning of time – only God knows how long ago that was – we have been asleep dreaming. This doesn’t mean we’re lying on our bed physically asleep. It means a Spiritual darkness, a dream of darkness that has been long and cruel. A darkness that has blinded us to our true Selves and our Creator. A darkness that has caused us to lose our way to the point where we no longer know who, where or what we are. A darkness that has caused us to believe we’re separated and alone against the Universe, which has left us frightened.

“Prisoners bound with heavy chains for years, starved and emaciated, weak and exhausted and with eyes so long cast down in darkness they remember not the light, do not leap up in joy the instant they are made free.”  –ACIM

The above quote is used by Jesus as a metaphor in describing most of humanity and the process of awakening from the dream of darkness. The Course also tells us that, “The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world.Jesus likens us to prisoners who for years have kept their eyes cast down in darkness to the point where they don’t even remember that there ever was, or is, any light.

Most of us understand what the consequences would probably be if, after being in that condition for years, a bright light was suddenly turned on. The prisoners would be blinded by the brightness. And even though they couldn’t see in the darkness, they still wouldn’t be able to see in the light. On top of that they would be terrified not knowing what the light was.

I’m going to close this post with another quote from A Course In Miracles: “So fearful is the dream, so seeming real, he could not waken to reality without the sweat of terror and a scream of mortal fear unless a gentler dream preceded his awaking and allowed his calmer mind to welcome, not to fear, the Voice that calls with love to waken him.”   –ACIM

Thank you for visiting this site. I am truly grateful. May You be blessed as you awaken to the truth of what you really are.
