The Birth of Fear

“In your world love has no meaning unless it is attached to a particular thing. And as soon as love is attached to a particular, love’s opposite is brought into existence.” …ACOL

Have you ever taken the time to contemplate the idea of Love and fear dwelling in the same space? What about the proclamation that perfect love casts out fear? The above quote, taken from A Course of Love, implies strongly that as long as we see the flesh and fail to recognize the Spirit, Love in Itself has no meaning. It becomes just another word which is bandied around without understanding or meaning attached to it. In order to give it meaning we attach it to a particular and do so still without any understanding attached to it.

It’s not difficult to see that when love is attached to a particular person or thing its opposite is brought into existence. In this world everything is endowed with an opposite and that includes the specialness we erroneously refer to as love. Love on its own has no opposite for outside of Love nothing exists, therefore there is no opposite. But in this physical world of duality Love is reduced to specialness and attached to a specific subject. This attachment immediately provides it with an opposite which we experience as fear.

I’m not trying to tell you that in loving another there aren’t feelings of happiness and joy or even euphoria that arise initially. I understand as well as anyone that the love we experience in this world is usually accompanied by some, or all, of these emotions and sometimes even a feeling of completion. But I also understand that everything, and I mean everything including the subject to which we attach love, in this world is temporary.

We all know this and it’s this certainty that causes Love’s opposite to be brought into existence. Lurking just below the surface of all the joyful feelings we experience from attaching love to a specific lies the dreaded and fearful sense of loss. The uneasy and fearful feeling that the relationship can be cut short by circumstances outside of our control at any moment; in the blink of an eye as they say.

“There is no home can shelter love and fear. They cannot coexist. If you are real, then fear must be illusion. And if fear is real, then you do not exist at all.” …ACIM

The Course is consistent in its claim that Love created you like Itself. This site repeats itself quite often with the assertion that you were created by Love, from Love and for Love. Fear is unknown in the realms of creation and is not a part of your reality. It’s an illusion and a result of your belief in separation which is the greatest illusion of all and the originator of all other illusions.

Illusions are not purposeless and the illusion we refer to as fear is no exception. The ego is very much aware of fear’s purpose and fills your mind, which is its home, with negative and fearful thoughts. These negative and fearful thoughts are explicitly designed by the ego to hide your true Self, which is Love. As the above ACIM quote plainly states, no home can shelter love and fear. They cannot coexist. By accepting the ego’s teaching concerning loss, especially of a person to whom you have attached love, you allow it to fill your mind, its home, with fear.

The ego, being your own separated self, desires specialness for itself above all else. In its quest for specialness it realizes that fear must not be seen as too connected to its goal of special love. It is sufficiently intelligent to devise a scheme that keeps this fear quite well hidden. To do so it places it just below the surface of the joy it allows you to experience when you attach love to a specific person or persons. By placing it below the surface and allowing joy to be felt it transforms naked fear into an intermittent feeling of dread and loss.

This dreaded fear of loss is felt when you see the person to whom you have attached your love as a physical being. In other words, it occurs because you see only the flesh and fail to recognize the Spirit. You may keep it under wraps, as they say, but the nagging awareness that all things physical must eventually come to an end is always there.

All the maladies of the current time as well as those of history would give way to love without the interference of all that would make special.” …ACOL

In the image quote on the left don Miguel Ruiz Jr. expresses the glorious truth that by loving others unconditionally we see them as beautiful expressions of the divine. In other words, by not placing conditions upon It, we recognize Love as what it is. Our vision is then directed by Love away from the physical and toward Itself. Specialness, which is the originator of all the negativity and misery we experience in this world, then falls away as Love allows us to recognize others, and ourselves, as what we truly are, beautiful expressions of the divine.

In an attempt to overcome its littleness and insignificance the ego pursues an unending quest between birth and death for specialness. In its determination to make itself and a few others special it believes in the idea of bestowing very conditional love on a few. In its delusion it believes that Love can be divided into degrees and more can be given to some than others. It always bestows more on those from whom it believes it can extract the most praise and recognition of its own specialness.

Only in this physical world of illusions where the ego rules can a few beautiful expressions of the divine be made more special than others. Those who have more money, those who have more power, those who have more influence, those who receive more education, those who are endowed with more beauty, etc., etc., are looked upon as more special than others less fortunate.

This is accomplished by that which the ego believes is love. The love of money, the love of power, the love of influence, the love of education, the love of beauty. All of these attributes are made special by a conditional love, which is not love at all but fear. And fear, the ego’s love, is the cause of all the maladies of the current time as well as those of history.

No expression of the Devine can be more special than another. Love does not have conditions and no conditions can ever be placed upon It. The very instant the ego attempts to place conditions upon It It becomes unrecognizable allowing only fear, the ego’s version of it, to be experienced.

I’m going to close this post with a short quote from A Course in Miracles: “For only love creates in truth, and truth can never fear.”
