“There is no doubt that is not rooted here. There is no question but reflects this one. There is no conflict that does not entail the single simple question, ‘What am I?’” …A Course In Miracles
Who is there among us that hasn’t thought about, talked about, wondered about or in some way pondered the simple but yet so seemingly deep and complicated question; what am I? Most people find themselves in a desperate quagmire of fear and uncertainty because they have chosen to accept the ego’s answer to this question. The ego sternly insists you are a body of flesh and nothing else. Even though most have resigned themselves to accept this answer as obvious, there’s always that gnawing in the back of their minds that there’s more to it.
The ego will compromise some on this point when providing its answer. It will even allow the belief that a creator created you as long as you agree that the creation was physical. In the ego’s version you were created from a piece of clay, which, even though a creator was involved, does no more than strengthen the erroneous and idiotic idea that you’re a flesh body.
“You are the Spirit lovingly endowed with all your Father’s love and peace and joy.” …ACIM
Which version sounds better to you? Would you rather see yourself as a physical being with all its fears, maladies, troubles etc.; or would you rather choose to see yourself as Spirit lovingly endowed with all your Father’s love and peace and joy? And make no mistake, it is a choice. In The Course Jesus, talking about this very subject, says: On this one choice does all your world depend, for here have you established what you are, as flesh or Spirit in your own belief.
Whatever a human believes becomes true for him or her. If you believe you’re a physical body then that’s your truth. If you believe you’re a Spirit Being then that’s your truth. But that being said, your beliefs cannot change reality, they can only make what you believe to be true seem real. The Course tells us plainly: You are as God created you. All else but this one thing is folly to believe.
“You will never rest until you know your function and fulfill it…” …ACIM
Do you believe there’s a purpose to life; or do you believe life is something that randomly happens to you? Do you believe you’re here in this physical environment; or do you believe this physical experience to be no more than a dream? Whatever you believe to be true is true for you.
A belief is no more than a bunch of thoughts you keep thinking until they make sense and become true for you. I have developed the belief that there is no purpose to life other than finding happiness and joy. But that’s the purpose of life, not my function. The above Course In Miracles quote makes it plain that you will never find true happiness until you know your function and fulfil it. My question at this point is; how could you know what your function is without first knowing what you are?
Right here is where we run smack-dab into a conundrum for in this world of physicality it is impossible to know. This world is on a different level because it’s made on the idea of separation from God and only God knows anything. The closest we can get to knowledge in this world is right, or true, perception.
When we decided to separate from God we also separated ourselves from knowledge. The power of perception has filled the void left by knowledge and therefore, we can only perceive while we believe we’re here. We have no way of ever knowing until we choose to recognize the Spirit as what we really are. We cannot continue to see the flesh and ignore the Spirit and know what we are or what our function is.
“The only thing that can be surely known by any living thing is what it is.” …ACIM
If you’re alive – and you are if you’re reading this – you already know what you are. As the above quote informs us, knowing what you are is the only thing that can be surely known by any living thing. Because I’ve already pointed out that in this world of physicality it’s impossible to know, this may seem like a contradiction, but it’s not. Everything is based on your beliefs. As long as you believe you’re in this physical world you cannot know, but the truth is, you’re not in this world.
You must be willing to change your mind about yourself and the world if you ever hope to recognize the Spirit and, in turn, find your way back to knowledge. This world and everything in it is all illusions. If you perceive yourself to be anything other than happy, healed and whole you’re using your power of perception wrongly and believing in illusions. For you are a part of God and it’s impossible for a part of God to be anything other than happy and whole.
A part of God doesn’t need healing but the part of your mind where the ego resides and believes it has separated from God needs healing indeed. It’s the one and only power in all the universe that can cause a part of God to believe he is not what he is. The mind that perceives this world and the bodies that seem to inhabit it as real is the small part of your holy Mind that falsely believes it exists apart from God. But nothing can exist apart from God and that includes the ego and its perceived home. Again, this whole world and everything in it is all an illusion. It is not there and neither are you. You are at Home in God’s Mind where you were placed when you were created and where you will remain for all eternity.
“Only you can deprive yourself of anything.” …ACIM
Everything in existence is already yours. How could it be otherwise if you’re part of God? You are a Co-Creator with God and with Him you created everything in this universe and all other universes. Therefore, how could it not be yours? The only way Everything could not be yours is through your beliefs denying what you are. You deny your own reality and then wonder why healing stands aloof from you. You believe the body is you and the body needs healing. The body is not you and the body needs no healing. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, only your ego mind, or the part that believes you’re separate from God needs healing.
Only you can stand in the way of perfect health and happiness. Nothing else in existence has any power over you other than yourself. Through your beliefs you deny your own reality and by doing so, you block the path of that which the Creator wills for you. That’s how mighty your power is. Your Power is unlimited and when used wrongly it’s strong enough to deny God’s will for you, which is perfect happiness. And perfect health must be included or there’s no perfect happiness.
“If you remain as God created you, appearances cannot replace the truth, health cannot turn to sickness, nor can death be substitute for life or fear for love.” …ACIM
The one thing that will cause you to believe you’re not as God created you is your belief in the illusion that the body is you. For it doesn’t take a whole lot of understanding to realize the body you have now is not the same one you had ten years ago; bodies do change. But as the above quote points out, appearances cannot replace the truth.
One of the main teachings of A Course In Miracles is that you have a choice in which scenario you’re going to accept. But it also strongly implies that even though you may choose which one is true for you you have no choice as to whether you must choose one or the other. It says: “You see the flesh or recognize the Spirit. There is no compromise between the two.” You cannot compromise on this. You cannot believe you’re a flesh body and still believe yourself to be a Spirit Being. You are one or the other but not both.
If you have made the choice to see the flesh as what you are then the truth is hidden from you. But it’s not hidden by anything other than your own choice. This choice brings nothing but illusions to your awareness and the illusion that health can turn to sickness becomes real to you. Also the illusionary belief that life must end in death becomes real and turns into the most fearful belief of them all.
I’m going to close this post with another quote from A Course In Miracles: “You are as God created you, and so is every living thing you look upon, regardless of the images you see. What you behold as sickness and as pain, as weakness and as suffering and loss is but temptation to perceive yourself defenseless and in hell.”
I am grateful to you for visiting this site. May God richly bless you.
“It would be most beneficial to remind yourself that Love created you like Itself. Hear the truth about yourself in this.” …ACIM
