The final Surprise
“The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.” –Rumi
The great Persian poet and mystic, Rumi, lived and taught around eight hundred years ago. Jesus, the Source of The Course, lived and taught somewhere around twelve hundred years before that. For thousands of years before Jesus’ physical sojourn there were probably hundreds of Spiritual teachers teaching the truth. Between Jesus’ time and Rumi’s physical experience the same thing was happening and it has also been happening since Rumi’s time right up to the present. (When I talk about them living and teaching I’m talking about the specific physical experiences we’re aware of.) Since then, as in the case of Jesus speaking The Course to Helen Schucman, many have been teaching, and still are.
When I read something like the above quote by Rumi my mind immediately shifts into the wondering and questioning mode and wonders; does The Course concur with Rumi’s statement? In answer I find this passage in The Course: “There is nothing outside you. That is what you must ultimately learn, for it is in that realization that the Kingdom of Heaven is restored to you.” And then I recall the following from The Course: “This course will be believed entirely or not at all. For it is wholly true or wholly false and cannot be but partially believed.”
If perceived objectively with a neutral state of mind, the two statements, The universe is not outside of you and There is nothing outside you, wholeheartedly agree with each other.
“Here the deathless come to die, the all-encompassing to suffer loss, the timeless to be made the slaves of time.” –ACIM
The above quote is referring to this physical world which we in our foolish arrogance believe we have made to accommodate the foolishness mentioned in the same quote. Everyone should slowly read and meditate upon the silliness of the deathless coming to die. The all-encompassing suffering loss. The timeless becoming the slaves of time.
It all sounds really silly; doesn’t it? But that’s the world we believe we live in. A world of impossibilities seemingly made real, which, in reality, is nothing but a world of illusions. How could it be anything other than illusions for the deathless to die, the all-encompassing to suffer loss and the timeless to be made the slaves of time?
“That one error, which brought truth to illusion, infinity to time, and life to death, was all you ever made. Your whole world rests upon it.” –ACIM
The one error that we made was to convince ourselves that we could separate from our Creator and eternity and immerse ourselves in time. In this illusionary separation from our Creator we, among other negativites, brought eternal life to the illusion of death, love to fear and made ourselves slaves to time. And as the quote says: Your whole world rests upon it. In other words, the whole world you see, and think you live in, is built upon, and rests upon, an error.
The whole basis of all the negativities we seem to find ourselves engrossed in as inhabitants of this physical dimension is the tiny mad idea that time could take the place of eternity. The whole separation fallacy is based on this one insane idea. God’s separated Sons, which is you, me and all others who find themselves immersed in time, used the mighty Power of thought to convince themselves that they could make a better creation if they were separate from their Creator.
“Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep and dreamed a dream in which you were an alien to yourself and but a part of someone else’s dream.” –ACIM
The Course tells us that when God created us He made us part of Him, which means, even though we’re not aware of it, we have the same Power as God does. It seems that we were so determined to do that, which is impossible even for the Power of God, we tried anyway. The impossible being to separate ourselves from our Creator. It cannot happen, nothing can be separate from God and live. But, in our determination we put ourselves to sleep and dreamed it was possible.
We dreamt of time and in our dream we immersed ourselves into it and dreamed we were something other than we really are. We dreamed the ego, the body and the world of separate bodies into that which we, in our dreaming, perceived to be reality. The real problem arose when we, being asleep, lost the awareness that we are the dreamer and perceive ourselves as figures in someone else’s dream. In our dreaming, we became part of the dreaming of the world and saw ourselves as weak entities at the mercy of the world’s dream.
“You will undertake a journey because you are not at home in this world. –ACIM
How could we be at home in a dream, which is what this world is? As Jesus tells us, we have put ourselves to sleep and dreamed a dream. Which means that we haven’t left our Home but are asleep dreaming and that’s all. As The Course also says: “God’s Son is not a traveler through outer worlds.” Yet it tells us that we have undertaken a journey into darkness, which has been long and cruel, and we have gone deep into it.
The journey into darkness is the so-called “life” journey through this physical experience which is based on the erroneous belief that time can replace eternity. Most of us have gone so deep into it that we have no idea of what we are, where we are, how we got here, where we came from or where we’re going. But that being said, the only one of these ideas that matters at all is the one that asks; what am I? The others are irrelevant because when you remember what you are they won’t matter.
“Let all his learning and all his efforts be directed toward this one great final surprise, and he will not be content to be delayed by the little ones that may come to him on the way.” –ACIM
During this so-called lifetime in this physical world each person is faced with many unplanned happenings and surprises. Some of these surprises are tiny and hardly attract any attention. Jesus refers to them as “little ones.” Others are of such a magnitude that they remain with us throughout the rest of the journey. Even so, regardless of how big they may be they pale in comparison to the one referred to in the above quote. As Jesus puts it: “Yet nothing he can do can compare even in the slightest with the glorious surprise of remembering who he is.”
I’m going to close this post with A Course In Miracles quote: “Angels light the way, so that all darkness vanishes and you are standing in a light so bright and clear that you can understand all things you see. A tiny moment of surprise, perhaps, will make you pause before you realize the world you see before you in the light reflects the truth you knew and did not quite forget in wandering away in dreams.”
Thank you for visiting this site. I am truly grateful. May You be blessed with the revelation of this glorious surprise sooner rather than later.
