Is Time Our Friend?

“Time really, then, goes backward to an instant so ancient that it is beyond all memory and past even the possibility of remembering.”   –ACIM

How strange it all seems when we come face-to-face with the Truth! Who in this physical world of time can accept an idea as far-fetched as this one; that time is actually going backward? Again, this is one of those “times” when I need to reassure myself concerning the teachings of The Course. It’s at these moments that I need to seriously contemplate upon the following information it provides about itself: “This course will be believed entirely or not at all. For it is wholly true or wholly false and cannot be but partially believed.”

“It is this fact which demonstrates that time is an illusion.”   –ACIM

The “fact” that Jesus points to which demonstrates that time is an illusion is the false belief most humans hold that what God wills for you and me will happen someday in the future, but not right now. Most of us believe that if we pray hard and long enough with strong faith, God’s Blessings will eventually find us. But the Truth is, what God wills has already happened. And God has just one Will for you and me, which is perfect happiness. 

“This course is not beyond immediate learning unless you prefer to believe that what God wills takes time.”   –ACIM

The term, immediate, needs no explanation for everyone knows what it means. If something is going to happen immediately then it’s not going to happen sometime or someday in the future. It’s going to happen now; in the present. In this physical dimension where the illusion of time seems to be so real, it’s a very difficult lesson to learn that everything doesn’t need time before it happens. 

“When God created you, He made you part of Him.”   –ACIM

How many humans actually believe they’re part of God? I will venture to answer, not many. But as already mentioned, The Course will be believed entirely or not at all. I’m quoting The Course frequently as I’m writing this. Therefore, I must have accepted the authenticity of its teachings or I’m quoting and writing something I don’t believe. And that is not the case! 

“Love created me like Itself.” (Lesson 67)

If God created you and made you part of Him, and Love created you like Itself; does that mean you had two Creators? Or does it not mean that God and Love are synonymous; that They are one and the same Thing? 

Love created you like Itself is the reason you’re part of God. In Lesson 100 of The Course we’re told that God’s Will for you is perfect happiness. Does that not mean that God wills you to remember what you are? For how could you be part of God, created in Love’s likeness, and not be happy? 

 “Your creation by God is the only foundation which cannot be shaken because the light is in it.”   —ACIM

In this world of time and illusions every foundation you try to build your happiness upon can not only be shaken, but it’s almost guaranteed that they will be shaken and collapsed leaving you in a state of bewilderment. That’s because what God created cannot ever be in this world of illusions. God made you part of Him which, in truth, sets the real You so far outside the illusion of time that in reality you know nothing of it or what it means.

“How can a world of time and place exist if you remain as God created you?”   –ACIM

The only answer to the question posed above is; it can exist only in your and my beliefs about ourselves. Most of us believe that we’re separate from our Creator who dwells so far removed from time and place that He knows not of it. The very thing that caused this belief was the silly idea that, as The Course points out, time can come to circumvent eternity. 

“Into eternity, where all is one, there crept a tiny mad idea at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh.”   –ACIM

 The tiny mad idea that time can come to circumvent eternity is the cause of every form of fear, every so-called disease, every negative feeling, every malady and all other afflictions the human race has ever known. It’s also the cause and maker of the illusion we perceive of as a world of time and place as well as the maker of the ego which, itself is an illusion and therefore, exists only in the illusion of time and place.

The decision to believe that time can circumvent eternity became so attractive to the Son of God, which is, in reality, you and me, that we decided to immerse ourselves into it. But to do so would require separating ourselves from our Creator, which is impossible. 

Even we, as Creations of God endowed with all the Power of God, could not, can not, and never will be able to, separate ourselves from our Father. Therefore, as Jesus tells us in The Course: “Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep and dreamed a dream in which you were an alien to yourself and but a part of someone else’s dream.” 

“A dream is like a memory in that it pictures what you wanted shown to you.”   –ACIM

And here we are in this world of time, which, in truth, doesn’t exist and is nothing but a dream, being shown exactly what we asked for. We don’t remember asking for it because, as my opening quote says, it happened in an instant so ancient that it is beyond all memory and past even the possibility of remembering. 

“Time is your friend if you leave it to the Holy Spirit to use.”   –ACIM

How could anything acceptable for the Holy Spirit to use not be turned into a friend? Like all illusions, time is of our own making in the silly quest to separate ourselves from our Creator. The Holy Spirit can use anything and everything we have made in our madness if we simply turn it over to Him. Even though He dwells outside of time, in eternity, His Mission is, as Jesus tells us: To open the eyes of the blind… For He knows that they have not lost their vision but merely sleep.

Leaving time to the Holy Spirit to use means that it will cease to exist as we now perceive it. As we presently perceive time it is far removed from the idea of friendliness for we see its effects on all that we hold dear. Everything, including the bodies that most people believe are what they are, grow, as we say, old, and eventually crumble into dust. Without the Holy Spirit’s help time is to all of us just as Charlie Pride once sang: “Oh time you’re not a friend of mine.”

“And so it is no longer time at all. For, caught in the single instant of the eternal sanctity of God’s creation, it is transformed into forever.”   –ACIM

This quote is describing you and me, God’s holy Creation, and our holiness as revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. Time cannot remain itself in the presence of our reality as God created us. For we are Spiritual Beings asleep dreaming that we are existing in time. 

I’m going to close this post with another quote from A Course In Miracles: “Time is your friend if you leave it to the Holy Spirit to use. He needs but very little to restore God’s whole power to you. He Who transcends time for you understands what time is for. Holiness lies not in time but in eternity. There never was an instant in which God’s Son could lose his purity. His changeless state is beyond time, for his purity remains forever beyond attack and without variability.”
