Cause & Effect

“Where then is healing? Only where its cause is given its effects.”   –ACIM

In his great novel, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, Richard Bach wrote: “We teach best what we most need to learn.” I know for sure that I want to learn, but whether I need to, or not, is up for discussion with myself. That being said, I really and truly believe that there are miracles of healing always available for the asking.

If I am teaching, and again, if I believe The Course, I am, for it says: “Everyone teaches and teaches all the time.” I absolutely believe The Course or I wouldn’t be writing this post. So now the question arises in my mind; who am I teaching? The answer to that question can be none other than myself. Again, as The Course teaches me, and you also, if you’ll listen: “As you teach, so will you learn.”

So whether what I’m writing is sufficient to teach anyone else, or not, remains to be learned. But my prayer is that through studying, research and preparation I may learn whatever it is I need to learn.

“This world is full of miracles. They stand in shining silence next to every dream of pain and suffering, of sin and guilt.”   –ACIM

Is it possible that because we’re listening to the ego which teaches us that miracles come from a god who dwells way off in the heavens somewhere that we fail to see them? I think so. But the above quote tells a different story. It says that this world is full of miracles. It implies that every dream of guilt, sin, suffering or pain we encounter has the antidote standing in shining silence right next to it.

What is a miracle; can a miracle be described? Well The Course tells us that, for one thing, “You are a miracle, capable of creating in the likeness of your Creator.”  The Course also gives us this tid-bit of information: “There is no order of difficulty among miracles. One is not ‘harder’ or ‘bigger’ than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal.” Does that not strongly suggest that you, as a miracle, are an expression of love? That’s the way I see it. The reference is clear, miracles are expressions of love or as I like to see it: Expressions of God, for God is Love.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”   –Albert Einstein

The majority of human beings go through this physical experience never once thinking about the authenticity of miracles. They place miracles in the same category as Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse; they’re the same as fairy tales. Once in a great while something unexplainable happens and they’ll say something like; “Wow! What was that? Must have been a miracle, or something.”

Then there is the small minority who see everything as a miracle. There’s nothing that happens that is unexplainable for them. For God is in control of everything and when an occurrence happens that can’t be explained by normal means, they smile and say, “Thank you, God!”

As Albert Einstein pointed out in the above quote, there are only two ways to live your life. And, whether anyone believes it, or not, everything we do is done by choice. The Course tells us that: “The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world. You can decide to see it right.”

So it’s the one remaining freedom you have and therefore, it’s your choice as to which one it’s going to be for you.

“Actually, ‘Cause’ is a term properly belonging to God, and ‘Effect,’ which should also be capitalized, is His Son.   –ACIM

Is there anything in this world or in the universe itself that has no cause? It seems to me that such a thing would be impossible. What would it be? How could there be anything without a “cause?” The Course tells us that “God is the only Cause, and guilt is not of Him.” That sounds as if there is just one Cause of anything and everything in the realms of existence, and God is that Cause. It also sounds as if guilt, – all of which is caused by the belief in separation – and is the harbinger of all misery and negativity in our lives, is not included as an effect of the only Cause.

In answer to the above question; is there anything in this world or in the universe itself that has no cause? The answer is, there are two types of cause, for even illusions like guilt have a cause, and it’s not God. The same cause that causes illusions also causes them to disappear. The cause here is your belief and faith in them. Withdraw your faith and belief in illusions and their cause is gone and so they, along with their effects, disappear. The cause of illusions is also an illusion for if you believe in illusions then you believe in nothing and the cause of nothing is nothing. There is no real cause.

“Fear cannot be real without a cause, and God is the only Cause.”   –ACIM

Would I be contradicting the above quote if I said, fear does have a cause? No, I don’t think so, for in reality fear doesn’t exist, therefore, in reality it has no cause, for as the quote says, God is the only Cause and He is not the cause of fear.

That being said, in this world fear is one of the greatest illusions we have to deal with and if it didn’t have a cause it wouldn’t be here. The first cause fear has is the teaching we receive after we make our debut into this physical realm. As soon as we’re old enough to learn we’re taught to fear just about everything, including God.

This teaching is an extension of the belief that we are separated beings. Separate from everything and everyone in the Universe, including God. How could we not be filled with fear when we’re taught to see ourselves as being alone, except for a few friends and family members, facing an uncaring and merciless world? And a separate god, whom, because of separation, we know not, is supposed to be our only hope, but exists somewhere “out there,” far away from us?

“And there are overtones of seeming fear around the happy message, ‘God is love.’”   –ACIM

Who is there in this world that is not seeking love? Who is there that doesn’t want to love and be loved? I believe the greatest desire of every living thing is to love and to be loved. But, it seems, real and true love is an elusive Energy in this world of illusions.

Perfect love casts out fear, but the love we find in this world usually compounds it. When we “fall in love,” as they say, we soon feel a slight dread of losing the person, animal or other thing we love. In other words, we become fearful that some unforeseen happening could take away the love we’ve found. Which is impossible when we discover what true Love is. For Love is God and God is Love and God’s will for me – and you – is perfect happiness.

“With this as purpose is the body healed. It is not used to witness to the dream of separation and disease.”   –ACIM

My opening quote asks; Where then is healing? Most people believe that it’s the body that needs healing and therefore healing must take place in the body. But this belief is not true at all. As The Course says, “The body needs no healing.”

My body is either healed or sick in response to my beliefs. The belief that I’m separate from God, and everyone and everything else in the universe, is the cause of all, and I mean all, sickness my body experiences.

The same quote answers its own question: Only where its cause is given its effects. Even though all healing originates with God, the cause of my own healing, or sickness, is in my thoughts, which are in my mind. As Jesus tells us: “It is your thoughts alone that cause you pain. Nothing external to your mind can hurt or injure you in any way.” Therefore, both the cause and the effects of my healing are in my mind and nowhere else.

I’m going to close this post with a quote from A Course In Miracles: “No one but yourself affects you. There is nothing in the world which has the power to make you ill or sad or weak or frail. But it is you who have the power to dominate all things you see by merely recognizing what you are.”

Thank You for visiting this site. I am truly grateful. May God richly Bless you with perfect happiness.
