You don’t have to turn on the so-called news to realize that this world is reaching the condition known as “dire straits.” It’s already a world based in fear and it seems its human inhabitants are becoming more fearful by the moment. Most of these inhabitants either believe they’re in bodies or they are bodies and by this belief they have chosen loveless channels of expression. The opposite of love is fear and when we choose to express ourselves lovelessly we offer no alternative other than expressions of fear. And fear, like Mark Twain’s remark about a lie travelling around the world and back again while the truth is lacing up its boots, seems to be able to outrun love every time. 

“There is no doubt that is not rooted here. There is no question but reflects this one. There is no conflict that does not entail the single simple question, ‘What am I?’”   –A Course In Miracles

How you view the world and how you perceive what’s going on in it depends entirely upon your answer to that simple question; What am I? The Course goes on to say: “The only thing that can be surely known by any living thing is what it is.” Only those who refuse to see the truth can express themselves lovelessly. They have refused to accept the only thing that can be surely known. By this refusal is Love rejected in favor of Its opposite, fear. It quickly fills the mind and is projected from one mind to another and travels around the world while Love is still lacing up its boots. 

Fear is the most destructive force in all the universe. It’s powerful enough to destroy lives, freedom and all other good and wonderful things. It grips its host in arms of steel and squeezes the breath into a laboured repetition of coldness and unforgiveness. It overcomes and destroys everything in its cold and unforgiving path. Nothing, it seems, can stop it and its destroying power. For those who have allowed it into their minds there seems to be no antidote to it. But this is an illusion for the antidote is left lacing up its boots waiting for your recognition and your acceptance. 

“Yet who could ask this question except one who has refused to recognize himself?”   –A Course In Miracles 

By holding to the belief that you’re a physical body and nothing more you have refused to recognize or acknowledge the only thing that can be surely known, which is the answer to the question; what am I? But even though you hold onto this belief and are ready to defend it at a moment’s notice you actually don’t believe it. You don’t believe it because in your moments of quiet reflection you still ask something or someone what you are. 

Who or what is it that asks this question and who or what is it addressed to? Who or what is it that is capable of giving an answer? If you don’t recognize who or what you are then you must believe you’re something other than you are. Most people listen to the ego as it gives its answer to this most important question. The ego’s answer is, you’re a body made of clay and you have the same power that the clay does, which is none. Like clay you can be washed away by any small storm. And so you keep your attention on the horizon watching fearfully for that storm that could wash you away. 

“Nothing the world believes is true. It is a place whose purpose is to be a home where those who claim they do not know themselves can come to question what it is they are.”   — A Course In Miracles 

Is it any wonder why this world is a world of fear when it’s filled with people who claim they don’t know what they are? You couldn’t exist if you didn’t know what you are. But yet you came here to question and learn what you are. And who do you question and what do you learn? 

If you ask your questions of the world and listen to the answers the world gives then you’ve learned to believe in a lie. For as the above quote says, nothing the world believes is true. And one thing is sure, it’s going to teach you what it believes. It believes in and teaches the lie that you’re a physical being and your journey is sickness and your destination is none other than the grave; every bit of which is a lie.  

“You are as God created you, and so is every living thing you look upon, regardless of the images you see.”   –A Course In Miracles

It’s time to direct your questions to a different Source. It’s time to accept the truth that there’s only one entity in the entire universe that knows what you are and that’s your Self. It’s time to listen to Love as It speaks through your heart and tells you that It created you like Itself. It’s time to accept that you will never be anything other than what you are. It’s time to accept the idea that you are not a little mound of clay that can be washed away by the first negative storm that comes along. 

It’s time to listen to the Holy Spirit and let Him remind you of these words from lesson ninety-seven in The Course: You are Spirit, one with Him and God, your brothers and your Self. 

“There is no problem, no event or situation, no perplexity that vision will not solve.”   –A Course In Miracles

There are two types of vision. There’s the only vision the world will accept and believe, which is physical and sees only the body. Then there’s the vision of the heart which allows for recognition of the Spirit. The former is not vision at all but is only what the body’s eyes can see. And they can see only as far as the surface; to that which stops light. 

The latter needs no artificial light for it does not see the physical at all. It looks beyond illusions and sees only the truth. Instead of a world in “dire straits” it sees a world where Love rules; a world of abundance, beauty, freedom and health. A world created by Love and filled with the good, the beautiful, and the holy.

As this world spirals deeper and deeper into the hell of fear it’s time to make the decision as to which type of vision you’re going to employ in your life. And make no mistake about it, if you don’t consciously make a decision then it has already been made for you. 

As you think about this decision you should keep the following words from The Course in the forefront of your mind: “There is nothing in the world which has the power to make you ill or sad or weak or frail. But it is you who have the power to dominate all things you see by merely recognizing what you are.” 

I’m going to close this post with another Course In Miracles quote: “Nothing except your thoughts can make you think you are vulnerable. And nothing except your thoughts can prove to you this is not so.
