“When you create a problem, you create pain. All it takes is a simple choice, a simple decision: No matter what happens, I will create no more pain for myself. I will create no more problems.” –Eckhart Tolle
A human being is the only entity in the entire universe that is so well endowed with intelligence that he doesn’t know what he is. The whole concept of life for him is that miniscule space between birth and death. He doesn’t remember being born but he’s certain he was because when he’s old enough to receive the lesson it comes to him experientially. At this point he begins to grow beyond the fairy tale of being delivered by a stork. He eventually wakes up to the idea that he was borne by and delivered into this physical realm by his mother.
He’s now at the stage where his learning begins. Immediately he’s taught to believe that he’s something other than he really is. He’s taught that he’s about the most powerless creature in all the universe. The only hope he has is to become dependent upon a god who dwells way off in space somewhere. A god outside of himself that doesn’t exist but to whom he’s taught to pray and depend upon for salvation.
“You are a miracle, capable of creating in the likeness of your Creator. Everything else is only your own nightmare and does not exist.” –A Course In Miracles
There’s very few humans who really and truly believe the foolishness they’re taught concerning their own identity. And so they spend their entire physical journey from the time they’re taught to let go of any connection to their Source to the illusion known as death, disenchanted and confused.
They go through some middle years not paying much attention to that period known as old age. Even so they learn to pay attention to and celebrate each and every year that passes with a Birthday celebration.
This custom cannot help but cause your attention to be drawn to the idea that life is passing you by; that you are not only getting older but also a year closer to the experience erroneously referred to as death.
Everything else is only your own nightmare and does not exist
Do you think that death is part of a miracle; do you see old age as part of a miracle? The Indian Hindu mystic, Ramakrishna, is supposed to be the author of the following quote: “The fabled musk deer searches the world over for the source of the scent which comes from itself.” We humans do pretty well the same useless thing. We pray, we beg and we search for miracles not realizing that, as The Course tells us, we are miracles, capable of creating in the likeness of our Creator.
If, as The Course says, you are a miracle, then it seems pretty certain that old age, sickness and death cannot be part of you. For these things are not miraculous, they are the very opposite of miracles. Life is a miracle and death is not, as many, many people believe and teach, a part of life. Death is part of everything else mentioned in the above quote and therefore, is only your own nightmare and does not exist.
That stage of this physical experience we refer to as old age is also not part of a miracle and neither is sickness. In fact, The Course defines sickness as a defense against the truth.
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” –Mark Twain
In this world, which is a world of illusions, the majority is trudging toward the most feared of all illusions; that which is referred to as death. In order to get there they’ll have to trudge up that long hill known as old age. (Please don’t jump on me with all the info about accidents, sickness, crime and other reasons why many don’t make it to old age. I understand this completely. This post is written for those who do make it and would like to change their minds and put an end to the fear that surrounds the illusion called death.)
They may not admit it, in fact, most won’t, but almost everyone who hasn’t wholeheartedly decided between the Spirit and the flesh is afraid of the illusion known as death. And it’s this fear that not only causes the so-called senior years to be an uphill trudge but also causes most of the illnesses that’s associated with those years.
“Would you not exchange your fears for truth if the exchange is yours for the asking?” –A Course In Miracles
If you’re ever to let go of the fear of death then it’s time to do as Mark Twain said, pause and reflect. As Eckhart Tolle said in my opening quote, all it takes is a simple choice, a simple decision. As the above quote implies, you can exchange your fears for truth by simply asking for the exchange.
The first decision you need to pause and reflect upon is this; do you see the flesh or recognize the Spirit? The decision in itself is a simple one but the results are enormous. Referring to this choice The Course says, “What you decide in this determines all you see and think is real and hold as true.”
Your beliefs will be revealed to you in this decision. The Course says, If you choose flesh, you never will escape the body as your own reality, for you have chosen that you want it so. You want it so because it’s your belief that you’re nothing else. You see the physical as the only realm there is and you want to hold onto what you believe to be yourself.
“But choose the Spirit, and all Heaven bends to touch your eyes and bless your holy sight, that you may see the world of flesh no more except to heal and comfort and to bless.” –A Course In Miracles
You don’t have a choice as to whether you’ll decide one way or the other in this. Until you choose to recognize the Spirit you will see the flesh. As long as you see the flesh and refuse the other option, old age, sickness and death with all the accompanying fears will remain your chosen path.
But choose to recognize the Spirit and you have asked to exchange your fears for truth. The exchange is yours for the asking. Once you have asked earnestly, sincerely and wholeheartedly you will be answered. All Heaven will join in blessing your sight so that you may once again recognize what you are; an ageless extension of God’s Love. You’ll no longer slog fearfully along the road of old age, sickness and death.
Love, the reality of what you are, will enter your awareness. The illusions of old age, sickness and death will no longer hold any meaning for you. These fearful illusions can only hold meaning for those who deny the Spirit. By denying the Spirit they see only the physical body, which itself is an illusion and the reason for all the others.
I’m going to close this post with a quote from A Course In Miracles: “What would you see without the fear of death? What would you feel and think if death held no attraction for you? Very simply, you would remember your Father. The Creator of life, the Source of everything that lives, the Father of the universe and of the universe of universes and of everything that lies even beyond them would you remember.”
