Your Greatest Fear

“This is an insane world, and do not underestimate the actual extent of its insanity.”    …A Course In Miracles

There are many, many people who don’t agree with the description of this world as put forth by Jesus in the above quote. For example, more than fifty years ago Louis Armstrong sang a song that’s still quite popular today, titled: “What A Wonderful World.” Mr. Armstrong didn’t write the song, he sang lyrics written by someone else, so we can’t be sure if he truly believed its message, or not. But it matters not if he did or didn’t. The point is, he probably caused a lot of people to change their perspectives and see beauty and wonder in an otherwise insane world.

This world was, and is, made by the ego from fear and separation and if left unto its own conclusions can produce nothing other than insanity. It is insane because it has no meaning or purpose except fear, sickness, suffering and death which are utterly opposites of truth and saneness. The world you see is of your own making and is nothing other than a reflection of that which you see within yourself.

“There is no world apart from what you wish, and herein lies your ultimate release.”   …Jesus (A Course In Miracles)

The world you see is either made by the ego from its insane thought-system or it’s created by Love from the Thought-system of Love. There is no other world than the one you wish to see. Most people see the world as their ego wishes it to be seen; an insane world of birth, purposeless existence, old age, sickness and death. A world that has absolutely no meaning whatsoever.

As the above quote points out, herein lies your ultimate release. You have the power to release yourself from this insane world of the ego by changing your perspective. It always comes back to the decision Jesus talked about when he said: “You see the flesh or recognize the Spirit… What you decide in this determines all you see and think is real and hold as true. On this one choice does all your world depend…

To be released from the world of the ego means that you have reached the point where you can differentiate between Spirit and flesh. It’s that point where you recognize that the “You” that has the power to change Its mind is not a body that’s made of the food it eats. You recognize that there’s a Power beyond the flesh which animates the flesh with life. This animator of flesh is the You that thinks but most of the time doesn’t understand the Power of Its Thoughts. It therefore sees Itself as separated from Its Source. It believes Itself to be trapped in a world that It knows is insane but is afraid to leave. For It believes the insane world of the ego can be left only through death.

“The world is not left by death but by truth…”   …A Course in Miracles

In this insane world of the ego the truth is different for everyone. This is a world of illusions and there can be no truth in illusions. Can I sit here at this computer and tell you what the truth is? The answer to that question is an emphatic no. For what may be truth for me is probably not truth for you. But that being said, I do believe the above quote by Jesus to be the truth

If, as most people believe, this world is left by death then what is it that leaves? It surely isn’t the flesh for the truth is, the body returns to the earth from whence it was taken. Therefore, that which leaves must be something else. Most people believe they have a Soul or a Spirit that leaves the body and goes somewhere upon their so-called death. But the truth is, you don’t have a Soul or a Spirit you are Spirit, or if you prefer, a Soul. That’s what you are.

“How else can you find joy in a joyless place except by realizing that you are not there?”   …A Course In Miracles

In the above quote Jesus is talking about this world and calls it a joyless place. His teaching here is, you don’t have to be joyless simply because the world is, for you are not there. He goes on to say, “You cannot be anywhere that God did not put you, and God created you as part of Him. That is both where you are and what you are.”

In the prior verse he talks about the Holy Spirit perceiving you as you are, which is perfect. He then goes on to say, “To perceive yourself this way is the only way in which you can find happiness in the world. That is because it is the acknowledgement that you are not in this world, for the world is unhappy.”

“Because your Creator creates only like Himself, you are like Him. You are part of Him Who is all power and glory and are therefore as unlimited as He is.”   …Jesus, in A Course In Miracles

What is truth; what are we to believe? If you look into a mirror do you see a part of God? Do you see reflected back at you an entity who is all power and glory and is therefore as unlimited as God is? The answer to those questions is usually, no. For only those who have learned to recognize the Spirit see beyond illusions. They realize that the image in the mirror is an illusion and so is its subject. They look with the heart and understanding instead of the physical eyes and therefore, are able to recognize the Spirit that animates the flesh.

The body is an illusion because it hides the truth. It causes you to believe that you are something other than you really are. It teaches you that you are it and it is you and therefore, contrary to the Will of your Father and your own, you are destined to grow old, get sick and die. Or you may die young. But either way it seems as if what God created like Himself has an appointment with the grave.

“…The deeper you go into the blackness of the ego’s foundation, the closer you come to the love that is hidden there. And it is this that frightens you.”   …Jesus, in A Course In Miracles

The ego is that tiny part of your mind that believes it has separated itself from its own Source of life. It believes that it has cast off the very essence of existence which is Love. It has not only cast it off but has filled itself with Love’s opposite, which is fear. Like a little kid playing with matches and accidentally burning the barn down it has become fearful and filled with guilt. It has sought refuge and safety in a body in a physical environment. Here it exists in an illusionary state believing it has hidden itself and escaped punishment. But it’s all an illusion.

The Source of all Life continues on with creation completely unaware of this little part of Itself that believes it has separated from the Whole. The Source of all Life is Love and Love knows nothing about guilt, punishment or separation. Such ideas have never, nor ever will, enter into Its awareness for nothing can exist separated from Itself.

Here we find our greatest fear. It matters not which way we turn, we cannot escape that which we fear the most, which is Love. If we let go of the ego we’re terrified that we’ll awaken in the Presence of Love. If we engage deeply with the ego we’re terrified we’ll find the Presence of Love hidden there.

I’m going to close this post with a quote from A Course In Miracles: “Very simply, then, you have become afraid of yourself. And no one wills to learn what he believes would destroy him.”
