“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” …Paulo Coelho
I used the above quote as I ended one of my posts, and a reader disagreed with it, which has inspired me to write this one. First of all I want to say that even though I must disagree with her perceptions, this post is in no way meant to be personal, argumentative or critical of her comment. I extend to her all the LOVE and positivity that I’m capable of sharing. But as already said, I must disagree with her perceptions and this post is simply to explain my reasons for doing so. The sentence in her comment that kept me thinking and finally persuaded me to write this post is this: “When we love we grasp. We become worse, usually.”
I have read some of her material and have concluded that she is much more intellectually endowed that I could ever hope to be. But intellect has absolutely nothing to do with LOVE, for LOVE will always avoid the intellect, which is an attribute of the mind; the home of the ego. Therefore, even though LOVE creates, and then surrounds, penetrates and permeates everything in existence it cannot be recognized by the mind, for the mind recognizes only illusions. LOVE is of the heart and can only be recognized by the heart, which is the very center of your being. It is what you are.
“What love is cannot be taught. It cannot be learned. But it can be recognized.” …ACOL
The one, and only, purpose there is left to this physical experience we erroneously refer to as “life” is to learn. And regardless of all the views and opinions on learning there is only one lesson to learn. And that one lesson is to recognize LOVE, or to recognize your true Self, for LOVE is what you are. Until you learn to recognize your Self you’ll continue to search for LOVE And you’ll search for it where it cannot be found, which is in an illusionary world outside of your Self.
There is no LOVE to be found in this world. There is a type of emotion that we refer to as love, but like the rest of this physical experience it’s an illusion. That’s why it disappoints and causes people like the reader mentioned above to believe that when we love we grasp. We become worse…
As Harold W. Becker points out in the above image quote, we are here to express the LOVE we are. Mr. Becker is one of those who have become aware of our original purpose, which was to express what we are in physical form. And what we are in truth is pure, unconditional LOVE dwelling in relationship and unity. As the Course tells us: “When God created you, He made you part of Him.” If we’re part of God, which is synonymous with LOVE, then we can be nothing other than pure, unconditional LOVE, in relationship and unity with Life. And, as mentioned, our original purpose of expression in physical form was to express this Truth.
“A sense of separation from God is the only lack he really needs to correct.” …ACIM
Even though in the above quote Jesus uses the nominative pronoun, he, he’s actually referring to all humans, or as the Course puts it, “man.”
Somewhere during our journey of expression into this physical world we lost sight of our original purpose, and perceived ourselves as separate entities. In separation we forgot who we are, why we’re here, how we got here, where we’re going, and worst of all, we forgot our Source. In other words, we began to perceive ourselves as alone and separated from everyone and everything in the universe.
This perceived separation caused us to make an ego and to begin expressing fear, which is the only thing left when we perceive ourselves as separate from LOVE. Expressing from the ego, the source of fear we have made for ourselves, has caused us to believe in lack, which in turn, has caused our belief in sickness, misery, poverty, suffering, loneliness and every other negative thing, including our believe in death as our destination. But it is not so!
“Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep and dreamed a dream in which you were an alien to yourself and but a part of someone else’s dream.” …ACIM
The world you see with all its negativity is nothing but a dream, which is why it’s an illusion. This dream is caused by our perceived separation from our Source of reality. And, as the great American comedian, Carol Burnett, pointed out in the above image quote, the only person who can change it for you is yourself.
I want to point out that when I talk about the world you see I’m not talking about the physical Earth, I’m talking about your perception of the world as you experience it. As Wayne Dyer once said,“loving people live in a loving world, hostile people live in a hostile world, same world.”
You can begin to change your perception of the world by asking a very important question over and over and over again until the answer is revealed to you. The question is: What am I? Keep asking this question until you can, at least conceive of the possibility that you may be something more than the little physical body you see reflected in the mirror.
Once the acceptance of the possibility that you may be something more than a physical body occurs, then the Light of understanding begins to dimly flicker on the distant horizon. For LOVE and understanding cannot be separated. Eventually you begin to understand that the world you see is a reflection of your inner world. It’s a reflection of the thought system from which you receive the majority of your thoughts.
“There are only two thought systems, and you demonstrate that you believe one or the other is true all the time.” …ACIM
The two thought systems are LOVE and fear. There are no others. The first one is the Thought System of God, and is accessed through the Heart, the very essence of your being. When you derive your thoughts from this one you, as Wayne Dyer said, live in a loving world.
The second one is LOVE’S opposite, which is the ego’s thought system and is accessed through the mind, which is the home of the ego. When you derive your thoughts from this one you, again as Wayne Dyer said, live in a hostile world. Or as the reader mentioned above called it, a hell world.
I’m going to close this post with part of a Sanskrit Proverb: “…For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness. And every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day.”
