Being Present

“Being present has nothing to do with time as you think of it”   …ACOL

Even though, as the above quote tells us, being present has nothing to do with time, you still cannot be present in any other time than now. But this post is not about time, whether past, present or future. It’s about being present and paying attention to life as it happens around us and flows through us. It’s about becoming aware of the Source of life and by doing so realizing it’s the same Source for peace – real and lasting peace that we can experience.

“There is no peace except the peace of God.”   …ACIM

As this site has repeated time and time again, this world which most humans believe they’re living in is not real. I understand this is a very difficult concept to wrap our minds around, but if we’re ever to experience real and lasting peace we must eventually accept the truth that it truly is an illusion. Once we can accept this truth we’ll understand that everything found in it is also part of the illusion, and that includes any peace it seems to offer.

Also as I’ve mentioned in numerous places throughout this site the beliefs and ideas which I write about are usually based on A Course in Miracles or A Course of Love. Both of these great spiritual works claim none other than Jesus Christ as their Source. Whether you accept this claim or not is your own prerogative. But as for me, I have accepted it wholeheartedly.

I refer to this here because around two thousand years ago, and prior to departing this world of illusions Jesus mentioned a peace which he called, my peace. He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”  (John 14:27 KJV)

In other words, it was – and still is – a peace that cannot be found anywhere in this world. That’s because, as Jesus implied in the above quote, this peace is not the same as that which the world has to offer. Anything this world has to offer can only be found outside of the Self, and therefore, is not real.

Later on the Apostle Paul referred to it as The peace of God, which passeth all understanding.”  As Paul mentioned, it is the peace of God, which is why it cannot be understood by the split human mind. Like all the attributes of God it cannot be understood in this world.

“Peace is an attribute in you. You cannot find it outside.”   …ACIM

Even though this peace cannot be understood in this world, the good news is, it can be experienced by any one of us at any time. This is so because it resides in us and we reside as co-creators in the Mind of God. But that being said, it takes desire and acceptance of a new thought system and rejection of the old one before the peace of God can be experienced.

Albert Einstein is quoted as having said, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”  In the above Bible quote Jesus is speaking to a very select few prior to his arrest, crucifixion, Resurrection, and subsequent departure from this world of illusions. He informed this group of Disciples that he would leave them his peace:  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. And now the question arises; did he give his peace to this small group only; or did he give it to every human on this Earth?

It may be difficult for some to accept, but when he said, my peace I give unto you, he was talking to you and me and not simply a small group of disciples two thousand years ago. As Einstein said, logic will get you from A to B. But to accept the concept that Jesus was talking to us as we are today, is not a straight line from A to B. It cannot be understood through logic nor any other attribute of the human mind.

“God’s creation is for eternity and has no use for time.”   …ACOL

Like everything in this world time is also an illusion. The only aspect of time that can be said to be real in any sense of the word is the eternal now. This is the aspect of time that we as physical expressions hardly ever get to experience. For we operate from logic, which perceives time as a continuous series of movements from one moment which immediately becomes the past and into the next moment which is always perceived as the future. In other words, we bring the same thoughts with us as we skip over the present and move into the future making it like the past.

The human mind in all its rigidity and logic cannot perceive of eternity, for it cannot move away from the concept of time, which according to the above quote, eternity has no use for. The perception of eternity requires a joining of the mind with the heart, the very center of your being. This cannot be accomplished through logic. It can only be accomplished through use of the imagination, which Einstein pointed out, will take you everywhere.

“All the works of man have their origin in creative fantasy. What right have we then to depreciate imagination.”    …Carl Jung

Most all who perceive this fleeting world of illusions as the only reality there is will dismiss the imagination as delusional and dreamy with no semblance of reality whatsoever. But in truth, the imagination is the only connection we have to reality. It’s the imagination that allows us to step beyond this physical prison we have placed ourselves in by adhering solely to the mind with all its rigidity, logic and fear.

We can use this wonderful tool to unite the mind with the heart, and by doing so become wholehearted. This union allows healing of the separated mind which, in turn, causes the ego and its thought system to slip back into the nothingness from which it came.

We’re then free to become aware of God’s Thought System which is filled with nothing but positive, joyful and happy thoughts of LOVE. By following these thoughts we can be present in the eternal now, in any perceived place or time. As Einstein implied, it will take us anywhere we desire to be.

“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.”    …Carl Sagan

A Course of Love seems to somewhat agree with Mr. Sagan when it says: “Beyond imagination is the spark that allows you to conceive of what never was conceived of before.” According to Mr Sagan it’s imagination itself that often carries us to worlds that never were. But A Course of Love puts it a bit differently. It says, beyond imagination is the spark that allows this.  And it goes on to identify this spark: This spark is inspiration, the infusion of spirit.

“Can you imagine what it means to have no cares, no worries, no anxieties, but merely to be perfectly calm and quiet all the time?”   …ACIM

This quote seems to suggest using the imagination to feel the meaning of a condition that is none other than The Peace of God. We all can use our imaginations to feel from the heart and not think from the mind. For the heart is the dwelling place of God’s peace. The same peace that Jesus gave to each of us. You can use the wonderful attribute of imagination to unify the mind and heart, and enter the eternal now where you can hear him speak these words directly to you: My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Until next time keep this quote by Oscar Wilde active in your memory: Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.”
