The Story

“It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.”
…Patrick Rothfuss

We are, each and every one of us, storytellers. Some of us are better than others at telling them but each of us has stories to tell. Some of the stories originate in our imaginations and are those which we call fiction, or make believe. Others are based in what we perceive to be reality and are those which we call true stories. Stories can be happy, joyful and uplifting or they can be sad, depressing and heartbreaking. And it seems there’s always an audience for both types.

Our whole lives are nothing but stories. If you take the time to think about your past experiences you’ll see nothing else. And each and every one of us are always and continually ready to tell them. Even the ones that are based in that which we call reality are changed as we tell them. Some we glorify by adding details and turning them into something far flung from that which they really were. Others we diminish through the same process. It depends on who we’re telling them to and how we feel about ourselves as we tell them.

Always. All the time.

It seems we all have the inherent need to tell our stories always and all the time, as Patrick Rothfuss said in my opening quote. The thing is, ordinarily it should be difficult to find an attentive audience to tell them to on a continuing basis. But it’s not for us, for we’re blessed with our own audience.

It’s a perfect scenario. We have no need to write a book, or speak before a gathering of strangers. We need not worry about what we’re going to say, nor how we’re going to say it. In fact, we don’t need to speak at all even though we often do and call it talking to ourselves.

Most of the time we simply let our minds, or sometimes our hearts, do the talking. They’re blessed with everything they need for the job. They have access to our imaginations, our memories, and our urges to tell stories. And on top of that we provide the audience for them always and all the time.

A story-telling circle

In our story telling we form a perfect circle. Even though it’s usually done unconsciously, or unaware, as soon as we arise from our beds in the morning we call upon one, or both, of these companions to tell us a story. We urge them to tell us what kind of a day we’re going to have. Is it going to be a good one or is it going to be a bad one? The story that we hear depends on which system of thought we have taught ourselves to listen to.

There’s a little story concerning our daily beginnings that Dr. Wayne Dyer used to be fond of telling. It’s not a direct quote but it goes something like this: Some people awaken and feel good enough to joyfully proclaim, Good Morning, God! And then there are those who feel the opposite way, and utter in a questioning and mournful tone, good god; morning?

This repetition of story telling begins as soon as we wake and then extends in a circle ending where it began, with ourselves. We first allow the feelings we’ve decided to accept to send a request to our minds, or to our hearts. A request to commence the daily cycle once again of repeating the same stories over and over throughout the day.

All feeling results from love or lack of love.”    …ACOL

In my opening quote Patrick Rothfuss implied that these stories makes us what we are. His observation was both correct and incorrect. For in truth we are, we always were and we will forever be as God created us. We cannot change the truth no matter how many stories we repeat to ourselves.

But as most of us see ourselves in this world he was correct. The stories we tell ourselves over and over and over again, day in and day out, eventually turn us into whatever it is we believe we are. For it’s the content of our stories that provides us with the building blocks we use in building our lives as we perceive them in this world of illusions. And the content is composed from the source we allow our feelings to decide upon.

If you feel unloving and unloved you’ll allow those feelings to choose the ego as your source. And the ego is only too happy to tell you repeatedly how awful you feel. It revels in telling you stories of how sick you are, how miserable you are, how much you despise your life, how worthless and unworthy you are. On and on it goes, story after story, day in and day out. There’s no limit to the negativity the ego has stored in its arsenal of illusions.

“When your mood tells you that you have chosen wrongly, and this is so whenever you are not joyous, then know this need not be.”   …ACIM

On the other hand the opposite is just as true. As soon as you wake up you can make a very important decision, one that will set the tone for the entire day. You can direct your heart to fill your imagination with nothing but love stories throughout the day, regardless of the events that seem to happen around you.

Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx

Groucho Marx recognized this important truth. He said: “I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.”

The same power of decision that was in Groucho Marx is in you. In fact, the Course tells us it’s the only real power you have left; it says: “The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world.”

Therefore, you are endowed with the power to reach for feelings of joy, of being energized, and of living in gratitude for all of life. You have the power to choose to live in the vibration of LOVE.

“We all have the ability to heal ourselves; I know, I have done so… In the morning, know that you are Loved, You Are Love and You Love   …Lisa Bellini

What could be more awesome than starting your day holding Ms. Bellini’s words, You are Loved, You Are Love and You Love, in your mind? And what would be more uplifting than directing you heart to repeat stories based on her thoughts to yourself over and over throughout the day?

You can’t begin to realize the change that would take place in your life in a very short period of time if your mind was told over and over and over again during the day this idea: I am LOVED, I am LOVE and I LOVE.
