“The acceptance of sickness as a decision of the mind for a purpose for which it would use the body is the basis of healing. And this is so for healing in all forms.” …ACIM
The subject of this post is a very difficult one to write about. But, even so, it’s one that touches the life of nearly every human. I’m talking about sickness and healing. I don’t think it would be appropriate for this blog to discuss one without the other.
I have always found it difficult to believe that sickness is a normal part of life. But as I look around this world it sure does seem as if it is. Even with all the advances in medicine and medical technology sickness seems to be on the increase. It seems that every day there’s news of someone that we’re connected to in someway being struck down with a so-called incurable disease. And I have many questions about this, but the most urgent one is; why?
I truly believe that it’s abnormal to be sick, but, as mentioned, everywhere I look sickness and disease seem to be on the increase – even some diseases that were supposed to have been eradicated are making a comeback. Again my question is; why?
Every Question Contains its Own Answer
I once read a book titled, “You Were Born Rich,” by Bob Proctor. There was a line in it that I have not forgotten. It went like this, there cannot be a question without an answer, therefore, every question contains its own answer. That may not be exactly as he wrote it – I’m recalling it from memory – but it’s very close to what he said.
So if that’s true, then I should be able to find the answer to my question in the question, which is; why? The only drawback to this is, there are different levels to consider when looking for an answer on this subject.
My why questions concerning the subject of sickness and disease are; why is there so much of it in this world? Does being born into this world automatically sentence us to sickness? I’m going to answer that last question with an emphatic, no! And then go on and explain why I believe this to be so.
“The body cannot heal because it cannot make itself sick. It needs no healing.” …ACIM
Well now, there’s a far-out idea, if there ever was one. How can that be? How can anyone say that the body needs no healing? It seems that everywhere we look in this world we see bodies in need of healing. It seems like a real paradox to look at all those broken and diseased bodies, and then say they need no healing.
But that’s the way my posts are. I keep repeating that they deviate from the normal thinking of the world. I think it’s time we began shining the Light of understanding into this dark world of sickness and disease, and get away from what it considers to be normal. But everything is a choice, and this is no exception. We can choose to keep following the teachings of the world and be led deeper and deeper into darkness. Or we can choose a different path – it’s all up to us.
These posts are mostly about subjects which are not of this world, because they’re based on the teachings of A Course in Miracles, which is uncompromising in its insistence that: we are as God created us, and so is every living thing we look upon, regardless of the images we see. It’s also very adamant when it points out that: “This course will be believed entirely or not at all.”
So here lies a conundrum for me to deal with. But that being said, it’s not a real conundrum at all, even though it causes me to think very deeply at times. For it’s nearly impossible to accept information such as bodies need no healing without deep study, much thinking, a lot of meditation and asking for explanations.
I’ve been a student of The Course for almost seven years, which means I’ve barely scratched the surface, as they say. I did a lot of reading and searching for answers that would satisfy, but could not find any until I discovered The Course. Since then I haven’t read any other spiritual work, for I find The Course to be the ultimate one. Therefore, I have to believe what it says, or get rid of it entirely.
“Very few people appreciate the real power of the mind” …ACIM
I have made my decision to believe what it says. Therefore I have to bring it all together in my mind and let its truth sink into my understanding. It’s imperative that I believe that we are as God created us, because that bit of information is repeated many times throughout The Course. And now these questions present themselves to me; would God create us to be sick: could anything He created be sick? The answer to those questions arrives before I can even ask the questions. The answer is a wholehearted and emphatic, NO!
But each time an answer makes itself known, new questions seem to appear; such as: If we remain as God created us, and He didn’t, nor couldn’t, create us to be sick; why are so many people sick?
“The mind is everything. What you think, you become.” …The Buddha “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” …Proverbs (KJV)
Even though The Course needs no reinforcing, I’ve chosen a couple different Sources here that concur with the already stated information on the Power of the mind. The Course tells us that very few people appreciate the real power of the mind. The Buddha, even though he lived somewhere around twenty-five hundred years before The Course was written, understood this. He informed his audience that the mind is everything. What you think, you become.
Around four hundred years before that, Solomon also agreed. In the Biblical Book of Proverbs he wrote: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” He didn’t say, in his mind, but he also didn’t say, in his brain. He said, in his heart. Solomon understood what The Course, written twenty-nine hundred years later, means when it says, “You also believe the body’s brain can think. If you but understood the nature of thought, you could but laugh at this insane idea.” Neither the brain nor the heart can think. The only thing that can think is the mind. When he said, in his heart, he was saying in the very depths of his belief system, that which he thinks in his mind to be his truth.
I don’t think it can be overstated just how powerful our minds are. In my last post I used as my opening quote the following from The Course: “It is your thoughts alone that cause you pain… There is nothing in the world which has the power to make you ill or sad or weak or frail.”
In reference to the body, The Course also tells us, “Its health or sickness depends entirely on how the mind perceives it.” And it also states that “The body cannot create, and the belief that it can, a fundamental error, produces all physical symptoms.”
Wow! Those are some very powerful out-of-this-world statements. It’s time to understand that it’s the mind that needs healing and not the body.
It’s time to rise above the negative commercials that keep telling us how sick we are. It’s time to rise above the negative thinking of this world. It’s time to rise above this dark, and dreary world of sickness and death. It’s time to use the awesome Power that God placed in our minds at creation, and rise up into the real world of Love, Light and Life.
I’m going to close this post with a quote from the Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu. He said: Ignoring knowledge is sickness. If one is sick of sickness, then one is not sick. The sage is not sick because he is sick of sickness.”
With that in mind it’s time to rise up by feeding our awesome minds with positive thoughts instead of the negative ones the world implores us to dwell upon.
